Jurassic World is the perfect popcorn action summer blockbuster. It is never boring and it is fun as hell. Obviously, it isn't as good as Jurassic Park but I would say that this is the only sequel to it that I actually care for. It did have its faults but I really enjoyed Jurassic World.
It is very clear that director Colin Trevorrow is a huge Jurassic Park fan. He was able to put in easter eggs and pay homage to the original dinosaur flick but without it being a blatant copy of it (I'm looking at you Jurassic Park 2 and 3). I really love the premise that Jurassic World is what John Hammond always imagined Jurassic Park to be. It is a fully functional amusement park where everything was technologically under control. However, when humanity starts to play God again, things go even worse than ever before.
The movie started a little slow for my liking. It focused a lot on the kids who were annoying at first but got better. It finally started to pick up the pace when things start to go bad. From then on, this movie was an absolute blast and so much fun. The CGI in the beginning was actually really bad and really noticeable but it became much better later in the movie. Although there wasn't really the awe factor that the original created, the dinosaurs were still very fun to watch (and still a little scary). Also, I know that a lot of people were questioning how in the trailer Chris Pratt is controlling the raptors but trust me, just like in Jurassic Park, the raptors get their chance to shine.
For starters, Chris Pratt has officially solidified his position as one of Hollywood's biggest and best stars. He is definitely not a one hit wonder and he will be around for many years. Pratt showed a newer side to his career which is less goofball and way more badass. He also delivered some of the movie's best one liners which I loved. His character Owen is ex-navy and current raptor trainer who was a super badass and he made some pretty smart moves along the way.
Bryce Dallas Howard's character Claire easily could have been the typical, cliche, "a woman can do a man's job too" character but I am so glad that she isn't. She is a character in a movie that is in charge of the park and it is that simple. Howard gave a great performance as well as Pratt and they really carry the movie. She was a part of some my favorite moments in the movie, plus she was in high heals the whole time so major props go to her.
The kids played by Ty Simpkins (Iron Man 3) and Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer) are both just okay even though their characters are very annoying at the beginning. Simpkins plays the EXACT SAME character as he played in Iron Man 3 which was an unusually genius 13 year old that knows all this hardcore science stuff and he uses that to help the main hero. Robinson was really good, I thought, but he has this whole "chick magnet" thing going on for him that I thought didn't work but once that went away, he was alright.
Vincent D'Onofrio plays the most cliche Jurassic Park character ever. He is an overweight guy who thinks he understands the dinosaurs but he really doesn't and his plan doesn't work the way he wants. Sound familiar? However, other very positive highlights came from Jake Johnson, who I thought was actually really good, and Omar Sy, who wasn't in it too much but he was very likable when he was.
I loved the dialogue in Jurassic World. It was perfectly cheesy and it nailed the tone of the movie. This film wasn't going for a super serious tone but a very fun and exciting one. Also, the 3rd act is summer blockbuster perfection. Let's just say that if you love the ending to Godzilla 2014 as much as I did, then you will LOVE the ending to Jurassic World.
Jurassic World is the first great follow up to Jurassic Park and I think it is definitely a worthy successor to it. It is a sequel that is also its own thing and even sets up for a little more. It is a very fun movie and you will not stop stuffing popcorn in your face. I can't wait to see what is coming next from the Jurassic Park franchise.
