I know what you are thinking. You think Spy is the next stupid Melissa McCarthy "Tammy"-esque movie. However, Spy is a fun action movie that happens to also be very funny and it was just horribly marketed. Even though it is technically a comedy, it is really more of an action movie that spoofs the James Bond type spy movies. Trust me, it has plenty of jokes but it also had great action.
From the very first scene you know what this movie is. We encounter the undercover mission of CIA secret agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law) who is assisted by Susan Cooper (McCarthy) who is back at headquarters speaking to Fine through his earpiece. The music and the cheesy one liners immediately spoof James Bond (even an extended opening credits montage with an original song which was genius) but the action scenes of Fine kicking ass were actually really well choreographed and directed. Paul Feig's direction overall was very impressive. It really shows off his skills as an action director and it actually made me intrigued in his Ghostbusters movie.
Melissa McCarthy finally showed that she can lead a movie well. She's great in supporting roles like in Bridesmaids and St. Vincent and she was a co-lead to Sandra Bullock in The Heat but in Tammy, things didn't go to well. However, Spy is really her movie and she is really good. It wasn't full of fat jokes like I was expecting (even though there were a few) but she was a really fun character to follow as she goes from being behind a desk to in the field. She was very funny but she also did a great job in the action scenes.
For me, my 2 favorite characters were Jason Statham's Rick Ford and Peter Serafinowicz's Aldo. Statham stole every single scene he was in. There is one scene where he is bragging about all of his missions and all the stuff he says just keeps escalating and escalating and it is so incredibly funny. Although he could have been in the movie more for my liking, he was great whenever he was on screen. Serafinowicz plays a crazy agent that has the hots for McCarthy's character and he is so amazing. He kept me laughing throughout all of his scenes. Also, Rose Byrne once again proved that she should be in more movies because she is just perfect. Playing a spoiled, bratty villain was something new for her and she was hysterical.
Spy surpassed my expectations and I had quite a bit of fun with it. Although, it drags a little in the 3rd act, the movie is mostly funny and an entertaining popcorn flick. It has great action along with very good comedy. Everybody in the movie is great and if you are looking for something fun this weekend, go see Spy.
