*SPOILER WARNING FOR X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST*
X-Men: Days of Future Past is one of the best comic book movies in recent years but unfortunately, during editing, the character Rogue was basically cut out of the movie all together. So now, almost 14 months after Days of Future Past's release, we get the Rogue Cut. With 17 minutes of new footage, would it make Days of Future Past better or worse?
First off, the scenes with Rogue were actually very short. Iceman suggests that they break out Rogue who is being experimented on inside Cerebro so that she can takeover for Kitty who Wolverine accidentally wounded. Then, Magneto and Iceman follow Professor X's guide and find Rogue and get her back in a cool little fight scene. One character's fate is changed in this scene and I think it was really rushed so I am glad it wasn't in the final film. However, the sequence was very cool but didn't really add anything to the movie which is probably the reason it was cut to begin with.
Even though her name is in the title, the stuff with Rogue was the least interesting part of the cut. The really intriguing additions were little scenes or lines here and there that added to the plot. My favorite addition was a scene in the very beginning after Kitty and Bishop escape and meet up with Professor X, Wolverine, and the rest of the gang. They go more into detail about the plan and why Kitty's group should help them. There is a line said by Bishop that is "You are changing history. Some of us could be killed, some of us may never be born, we have no idea how things may change". I love this scene because the stakes of their lives were never realized to the viewer. In the original cut, we don't have a reason to care for Bishop or Warpath or any of them. That all changes in this short scene.
A weird change that was made was that instead of Charles figuring out where Mystique was going by seeing her ticket, Mystique goes to Charles' house, sees Beast, they make out (while they are both blue), then she sneaks off to destroy Cerebro so they couldn't find her. The only reason they find her is by guessing she is going to follow Trask. This whole bit was so stupid and unnecessary and I am glad it was removed from the final cut.
Other than those major ones, none of the changes were very major but were still very fun to see. There were more scenes with Beast and Wolverine and more future action which was very cool to see that it was different. The new additions are fun but they make the movie very long and slightly not as good as the final cut. I had a fun time with it but frankly, you are better off just watching the new clips on YouTube instead of paying money to see this cut.
4/5 Stars
